24-residue peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 16S rRNA. Studied in cytoprotection models.
01 · Overview
Humanin is a 24-residue peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 16S rRNA, discovered in 2001 during a screen for factors protecting against Alzheimer's-type neurotoxicity. It is one of the earliest characterized mitochondrial-derived peptides.
Published research has characterized cytoprotective signaling via the WSX-1/gp130/CNTFRα receptor complex, anti-apoptotic effects in multiple tissue types, and roles in metabolic regulation. Alvar supplies humanin as an acetate salt; stock is limited to institutional researchers on the reserve list.
02 · Handling
